In this class, students will develop their persuasive writing skills and learn how to articulate their ideas effectively. We'll delve into the art of constructing compelling arguments through various techniques such as ethos, logos, pathos, modal verbs, emotive adjectives, essay structuring, paragraph composition, thesis statement creation, evidence citation, logical argumentation, and presentation refinement.
Class Overview:
The class is designed for high school students looking to enhance their persuasive writing abilities. The curriculum focuses on writing two well-structured persuasive essays or speeches, covering different formats and incorporating thorough feedback from the instructor.
Classes 1 2: We'll start with an introduction to persuasive techniques that include ethos appeal to credibility, logos appeal to logic, and pathos appeal to emotion. We'll also discuss modal verbs and emotive adjectives, essential tools for advanced persuasive writing. You'll learn about paragraph structuring, cohesive sequencing, how to write thesis statements, topic sentences, evidence-based arguments, and connecting your evidence back to your argument.
Classes 3 4: Next, we'll explore the fundamentals of persuasive speeches using examples from notable political addresses. We will dissect these speeches for powerful rhetorical strategies and then apply those techniques while selecting topics that you for your second essay or speech. This assignment will involve advanced rhetoric techniques such as sentence variety, proper use of punctuation semi-colons, hyphens, strategic rhetorical questions, and the nuances of persuasive speaking.
Throughout this class, students will refine their essays or speeches in collaboration with me on a one-on-one basis to ensure they are well-researched, evidence-based, and effectively communicated. The final segment includes a wrap-up session where you'll have the opportunity to present your speeches to classmates for peer feedback.
