For students who have already embarked upon the journey in MS 616: Writing the Self, this course builds on your foundation by offering a deeper dive into various genres of personal writing. We revisit concepts like self-reflection, disclosure, and weigh the potential drawbacks of writing for personal development.

The exploration now exts further into the transformative impact of writing on our mental health, the role of narrative in healing neurological trauma, and the implications of teaching writing within educational contexts. We will also examine how cultural narratives can influence medical practices, complementing traditional allopathic medicine.

In MS 621, students have ample opportunity to personalize their learning through interdisciplinary projects that may include but are not limited to , personal essays, autobiographical pieces, and poetry. A pivotal project spanning five weeks will allow you to apply your insights and creativity in a meaningful way that both your personal growth and professional aspirations.

MS 621 emphasizes the importance of journaling as an integral part of this learning journey. We encourage students to integrate dly writing into their routine, ming for at least one thousand words each week. As part of the course requirements, students will engage with the text The Muses Among Us by Kim Stafford to inspire their journaling journey. Additionally, they may incorporate other literature that inspires them and choose to share their work in an online forum if desired.
