My career path was unintentionally forged by a desert-dwelling, venomous serpant. Upon obtning my biology degree from college, I found myself in temporary jobs that took me to diverse locales where strange animals roamed free. This nomadic existence involved both tedious tasks and exhilarating adventures. One of my most memorable experiences occurred while studying with university researchers near Tucson, Arizona, amidst the towering saguaros.
Many of our colleagues were ecologists and zoologists who reveled in spotting tortoises making their way across granite boulders or a group of javelinas peacefully napping under shade. But there was also an evening spent hunting for snakes that had ventured out onto asphalt to bask in warmth, a night filled with excitement as we searched the empty backroads for creatures that our fris were eager to photograph.
In a moment of seripity, I found myself drawn to one such scene where a diamondback rattlesnake was coiled up on pavement. While my colleagues eagerly ventured closer with their cameras ready, I remned at a safe distance, captivated by the snake's elegance and regality as it defensively rsed its head in anticipation of a threat.
