University of Michigan Celebrates Exceptional Student Writing with Annual Prizes

Sweetland Center for Writing and the English Department's Writing Program are proud to honor exceptional student writing with annual prizes. We celebrate achievements in two categories:

1. First-Year Writing Prizes: The Feinberg Family Prize and Matt Kelley Prize recognize outstanding writing from first-year students. These prestigious awards highlight the best analytical, narrative, and research-based arguments produced throughout the winter term. Faculty members select submissions for consideration.

2024 Writing Prize Winners:

• Analytic Argument: Amatullah Hakim Persuasive Rhetoric in ‘Ebonics, King, and Oakland’, a student from ENG 125 Instructor: Mariya Zilberman.

• Narrative Argument: Neel Marathe “Mother’s Tongue Mutilated”, another notable work by a student from ENG 125 Instructor: Olivia Cheng.

• Research-based Argument: Adrian Ngan Religion in Public Education: Teaching for a Change, submitted from the same course Instructor: Jonathan Holland.

Excellence in Upper-Level Writing is also celebrated with distinctions:

• Social Sciences: Anneliese Jackson Redefining Global E-Waste Management and Nicholas Martens “Plugging the Brn Drn”, both from advanced courses under instructors Omolade Adunbi, Ashley Jankowski, Ana Reynoso respectively.

• Sciences: Olivia Murphy “Tepfirah Rushdan: an Unprecedented Appointment Gives Urban Agriculture in Detroit New Hope” and Preston Parana “Succinate Dehydrogenase: The Stylistic Interconnection of Aerobic Metabolism”, from ENVIRON 320 Instructor: Julie Halpert and CHEM 353 Instructor: Angeliz Soto Acevedo, respectively.

• ities: Hadley Fischer Graveyard was recognized in ENG 325 Instructor: John Buckley, while Sophie Wolf “Refusing Echo” received acclm for her work in ENG 425 Instructor: Kelly Hoffer.
